Subject: Re: [ietf-maillists-editors] managing IETF mailing lists (fwd)
Sure, forward progress is the converse of disruption, so it can be stated both positively and negatively. The real point in the IESG's mind is to get away from a tendency (that RFC 3683 encourages) to think of things in terms of crime and punishment. Brian James M Galvin wrote:
Seems I lost something through the versions. Although I never used the word "disruption" I had always intended there be a principle regarding forward progress. However, although I agree with your point your phrasing strikes me as having a somewhat negative spin to it. As I think about how I might suggest saying this differently it occurs to me that there is no "principle" associated with each of the definitions.Specifically, if we agree with the definitions then it occurs to me we should have principle regarding the responsibilities of the roles defined there. If we did this, then there would be a principle regarding behavior on the mailing list and the responsibility of the sergeant-at-arms to ensure forward progress is not "disrupted" by bad or poor behavior.Jim-- On Monday, June 26, 2006 2:37 PM +0200 Brian E Carpenter <brc@zurich.ibm.com> wrote regarding Re: [ietf-maillists-editors] managing IETF mailing lists (fwd) --One comment I have on the draft is that it doesn't mention the word "disruption." In the most recent IESG discussion on this topic, we identified the goal as "managing disruption". (And certainly not as punitive action.) I'd like to see this mentioned as a matter of principle, e.g. o A mailing list is only of value as long as the progress of discussion is not disrupted. An important objective is to provide tools and methods to list managers to manage and stop disruption when it occurs. See http://www.ietf.org/u/ietfchair/Spring06retreatNotes.txt section 4.
