Way too late.  Again, judging the result doesn't help.  Ensuring that
the process is good does.

wrt beauty contests ... I assume the nomcom would take relevant
information into account, not just popularity.  Yes there might be
intense lobbying efforts, but how much would those count?  Finally, to
the extent that popularity does become a factor, well, being well
thought of is, in fact, a good attribute for an AD.
