I think that the "US" people and government view the IETF as irrelevant.
Standards are set in the U.S.A via *market forces*. It is one of the only countries
in the world where that is the case. Most other countries turn to the ITU, IEEE, etc.
to tell them what to do. In many cases, one person in a country tells the leaders that
the ITU said so-and-so and that is all it takes to make-it-so in that country. The
IETF may be able to prey on third-world countries the way the ITU does, but
Americans will not be fooled. U.S. leaders are clearing the path for free markets to
work. If they do not, then we may as well all regress to communist/socialist states
as promoted by the I* society.
