Before answering Andy's question you might wish to read what the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) had to say about DNS wildcards and protocol conformance: http://www.iab.org/documents/docs/2003-09-20-dns-wildcards.html Look for the words "this was a legitimate use of wildcard records that did not in any way violate the DNS specifications themselves". I'm not trying to suggest that there aren't issues. My point is that the IAB has already confirmed that RFC conformance isn't an issue, so it's not productive to debate whether or not RFCs have been "broken". -Scott- (one of the VeriSign technical people)
