Speaking as the party who is hosting the list:

Actually, the message of which you speak had the From: header of the
sender, who carefully used a localpart of "verisign" in their email
address.
There is nothing insidious or malicious in the list management software
and no message is changed in any way as it passes through the system
(except to add the Internet standard List-* headers :-). I can not
imagine any compelling reason to change that (but then I'm generally an
honest and trustworthy person :-).
I volunteered to host this list. I did it because I felt like it and
because I felt the community would benefit from it. I have no
affiliation with VeriSign nor does my company. The domain name is not
even registered with VeriSign.
Nobody has access to the list of subscribers except me. I can not
imagine any compelling reason to change that.
You may not know me so perhaps none of this is much comfort to you.
However, I can tell you that no one at VeriSign has expressed any
interest in the list of subscribers or statistics about the list. I was
asked if everything is operational and if people are subscribing but
nothing else. In fact, there was genuine concern when someone expressed
subscription problems on nanog (a situation I do not understand myself
since the help desk was not contacted about it but I digress).
In any case the archive is public and as I'm sure you know there is a
lot that can be learned about a list through its archive.
I say all this neither to defend nor berate VeriSign. It is simply a
statement of fact. All subscribers and individuals are encouraged to
form their own opinions and choose their own course of action.
The list is here. You can use it or not as it suits you. If anyone has
questions about the list you should feel free to contact me directly.
