Subject: RE: [sitefinder-tech-discuss] Is this list alive?
And yet, in spite of overwhelming criticism, negative public opinion from the operational community, and, ICANN saying "don't do it", Verisign has announced plans to revive this brokenness because they "Just don't think the user community has been represented in the discussions." Their own analysis (they talked to a whole 35 companies, according to Verisign) revealed that the problems were "minor or an inconvenience". The only reason they are minor or inconvenient is because BIND allows us to disable your wildcard. That doesn't make it a good idea. The only correct behavior for email to non-existant domains is to return NXDOMAINin response to the DNS query. If Verisign can return NXDOMAIN for everything
except a web-browser query, then, it's just an abusive exploitation of your monopoly position to turn the internet into a revenue stream. If they can't, then, it's just broken and should not be allowed. I sincerely hope ICANN takes appropriate notice of this and files for an injunction to prevent Verisign from doing this. In fact, I think each and every person/organization on the internet that has the resources to do so should individually file for an injunction in their local court. Let's have Verisign play legal whack-a-mole over this. Owen--On Thursday, October 16, 2003 7:43 AM -0400 "Hollenbeck, Scott" <shollenbeck@verisign.com> wrote:
