Umm. I don't have a good answer for that. From the user interface standpoint (which is the particular problem I'm coming from) I don't really care. My user has just said, "Here's the name of the machine I want to do x with". I want to validate what they told me. I may not be able to do "x" right now, but even if I can, I don't want to just tell them that the provided host name timed out, or didn't provide the service. That's not the right answer. The first check I need to do is to see if the host name they gave me *exists*. In the past, I did that by looking up the A record. Now that solution isn't going to work. I want to know what will.

I'm not sure which upsets me more: that people are so unwilling to accept
responsibility for their own actions, or that they are so eager to regulate
everyone else's.
